To enter, stay in or transit through the whole of the Schengen area (Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Iceland and Norway), non-European students must obtain a long-term visa (>90 days), for study purpose and valid for 1 year. To do so, a proof of admission and financial support for the duration of study must be provided.

Important- A tourist visa cannot be converted into a student visa in any country of the European Union
- To apply for a student visa, the following documents are generally required:
- a valid passport
- passport photos
- entitlement to university admission (diplomas) and notification of admission from the university
- evidence of previous academic performance
- a proof of financial support guarantee for one year - The visa application is submitted and issued in your country of residence at the Embassy or Consulate of the hosting country - preferably as early as possible.
- For France, non-European students residing in France for more than 3 months must obtain a student residency permit (which is distinct from a visa), within two months of their arrival in France
- The long stay entry visa (more than 90 days) only gives access to the state that issues the visa, and the possibility of transit through other Schengen countries to enter that country, in which case it is known as are "National Visa" (NV).
